History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865 (5 volumes). The history of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865, is detailed in the five-volume series History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers by Samuel P. Bates, which provides regimental histories and soldier names. The state also formed the Pennsylvania Reserve Volunteer Corps in 1861 to retain excess volunteers, creating an elite force of 13 infantry, one cavalry, and one artillery regiment. These units fought in major Civil War battles, and records are available through the Pennsylvania State Archives.
